Hockey Season Kicks Off In Michigan

September 2022

This past weekend 142 teams from 2013s to 2004s competed, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for glory at the 2022 CCM Michigan Classic. With 1,955 goals netted in just over 300 games, and at the sound of the final buzzers, nine teams remained as champions.

2013 A 6-0 Compuware championship victory completed a weekend sweep. Compuware’s six-win weekend was fueled by Brecken Gough, Howie’s Hockey 2013 Division MVP, and excellent team defense which averaged one goal against per game.

2012 The 2012 division also saw an undisputed champion complete a perfect weekend. The Kensington Valley Renegades and Christian Phelps Howie’s Hockey 2012 Division MVP, defeated the Naperville Sabres by a final score of 5-1 to earn their hardware.

2011 No team was perfect in regulation, however, Honeybaked was undefeated. With two ties and an overtime thriller in the championship, Honeybaked and Ben Visconti, Howie’s Hockey 2011 Division MVP, finished on top in their home state defeating the Chicago Jets 4-3.

2010 At a whooping +24 goal differential and a perfect 6-0 record, the Arapahoe Warriors left no doubts on who was taking the 2010 division championship. The Colorado-based squad and Keegan Brown, Howie’s Hockey 2010 Division MVP, capped off their tournament sweep with a 6-3 victory over the Geneva Cyclones.

2009 Down in the semi-final game, the Irish Rovers scored in the final minute to force overtime where they advanced to the finals. Coming into the final facing the only remaining undefeated team in the division, the Rovers and Howie’s Hockey 2009 Division MVP, Noah Schultz, made a statement by shutting out the Naperville Sabres 4-0.

2008 Close to home, the Traverse City Northstars faced off against the undefeated Chicago Bulldogs for the championship. They gave the Bulldogs all they could but Ethan Newburg, Howie’s Hockey 2008 Division MVP, and the Bulldogs were ready for the challenge. The Chicago Bulldogs continued their dominant play completing a perfect weekend with a 4-1 victory over the Northstars.

2007/15U Michigan was in for a treat when two Windy City Titans were to duel for the final game of the 15U division. The Chicago Bulldogs and Chicago Hawks entered the game undefeated on the weekend. The Bulldogs were shutting down every opponent, only surrendering one goal over the five games prior to the championship. The Hawks were able to net three, but that wasn’t enough. The match was all square at 3-3 at the conclusion of regulation. Overtime was not enough to resolve a winner, but the shootout determined the final. The Chicago Bulldogs came out on top 4-3, and the Howie’s Hockey 15U Division MVP was awarded to the Chicago Bulldog’s Alex Chilicki.

16U The 16U division championship was awarded to another undisputed champion. The returning champs from last season, the Cheektowaga Warriors, retained their title in dominating fashion. Piling up 31 goals while only surrendering eight on their path to the championship, the Warriors completed their perfect weekend by defeating the West Dundee 6-2 in the Championship Game. Cole Bailey of the Warriors was awarded the Howie’s Hockey 16U Division MVP.

18U The Chicago Hawks had a dominant performance going a perfect 6-0 on the weekend and only allowing three goals against. The Hawks and Sam Battaglia, Howie’s Hockey 18U Division MVP, defeated West Michigan Varsity 4-1 in the Championship Game.
